"Good things come to those who wait..."

This idiom proves true on many occasions. In this case, it's true for beer. Our monthly beer sampling is being pushed back until Thursday October 1st. Sand Creek Brewing Company will be down at the store from 4-7pm pouring out those magnificent little cups of beer. Based out of Black River Falls, Sand Creek operates out of the oldest brewery building in Wisconsin, built in 1856. They've got quite a notable line-up, so stop on down for a taste:

Marie's baguettes, frozen croissants & savories

Some of our weekday shoppers may have encountered the aroma of fresh cooked bread recently. Just Local Food is pleased to announce we are now carrying fresh baguettes from Marie’s Original Bakery Monday through Saturday. These hand-shaped and baked from scratch baguettes are delivered straight from the oven between at 2:45 PM and 3:15 PM Monday through Friday and between 2:00 and 3PM on Saturday. It’s no surprise to any of us that we have been selling out of these baguettes within an hour of delivery. We’ve been fans of these all-butter baguettes since Marie started baking them and wanting to share them with our weekday shoppers for some time.

New local breads for breakfast, brunch, and lunch, are making their way to Just Local Food’s new freezer as well! Marie’s all-butter croissants and savories are baked from scratch with local ingredients from Eau Claire’s own Farmer’s Market. These pastries flaky and rich pastries are ready to be popped in your toaster oven at home or at work as part of a great local foods meal.

Brats!!

It's still grilling season, and we have lots of brats to choose from:
  • Pork Apple (Beaver Creek Ranch)
  • Turkey Apple (Beaver Creek Ranch)
  • Lamb Brats (Lambalot Acres)
  • Mushroom-Cheddar Brats (Crescent Meats)
  • Fresh Blue Cheese Brats (Crescent Meats)
  • Fresh Brats (Crescent Meats)
Plus, we have ONE Golden Hills bison ribeye steak left, which is available for 20% off.

Apparently some guys have strong opinions about the absolute best way to cook brats. And here's one guy who has two completely contradictory opinions. What do you think?
  • Tony Fatso Siciliano's parboil-in-beer-then-grill method (LINK to video)
  • Tony Fatso Siciliano's grill-first-then-put-in-beer method, because he says "Real grillers don't boil meat under any circumstances." (except when doing a video, of course). (LINK to article)

Thanks to Tony Fatso Siciliano for the photo!!

Brew News – September 2009

1. Oktoberfest Beers – Fall seasonal
2. Back-in-season beers, new offerings
3. Surly Update
4. Beer Sampling

1. Oktoberfest Beers – Fall Seasonal
A lot of beer drinkers agree: Fall is one of the best seasons for our favorite beverage. These malty, colorful beers complement the changing leaves and seem all the more refreshing on those crisp fall days. The Oktoberfest, or Märzen, style began due to complications from brewing beer during the warm summer months. To remedy the problem, the beer was brewed in March (“Märzen”) and stored in caves and cellars throughout the summer. The alcohol content was increased and/or hops were added to help preserve the beer even further. By late September and into October, it was ready to be consumed. The famous Oktoberfest celebration aligns with the much anticipated release of this beer. We offer six varieties from local and regional breweries:

Bell’s
Capital
New Glarus
Leinenkugel’s
Berghoff
Summit

Capital Autumnal Fire
-In 1997, the brewmaster modified their Oktoberfest recipe to make a Doppelbock. The fire-red color mirrors the color-explosion of the trees throughout the Autumn season. A multiple award-winning beer and a personal favorite of the “Beer Dudes” at Just Local Food.

2. Back-in-season & New Beers
Goose Island recently released a 22oz size bottle for their two Belgian-Style Reserve Ales. With an appearance like a bottle of wine, these exceptional beers are a great complement for a special dinner :
-Matilda
-Pere Jacques

--New Glarus Yokel
--New Glarus Unplugged Imperial Saison
--Furthermore’s Fallen Apple Cider with Cream Ale will be ready at the brewery by mid to late September. Look forward to seeing it on our shelves during the beginning days of October.

3. Surly Update
Beer from the Surly Brewing Company (Brooklyn Center, MN) has been available in Wisconsin for a while now, but only on tap. Unfortunately, the 4-packs of the uniquely-labeled 16oz cans won’t be around for another year or two for us ‘Sconnie folk. The brewery can hardly keep up with the demand by our beer-drinking neighbors to the West in the Twin Cities market. For now, we’ll have to settle for the few select bars that do offer this delicious beer.

4. Beer Sampling
Keep an eye out for our featured beer sampling this month. We’ve got something in the works, and as usual, you can get a FREE taste on Sept. 17th (the 3rd Thursday of the month).
